Beautiful day!
Ever have a day where everything seemed just so and even the bumps in the road were so easy to just glide over that you can't even remember them? That's what today seemed like for us.

After the early morning fog blew over (and I took the van over to Watsonville for new shocks and struts), we spent most of the day playing, wandering and doing things around the Ranch. Cort got a fun surprise from Mom's and my stop at Home Depot -- a Cortland apple tree to plant here on the Ranch! We've been wanting one for awhile and what a shock to find a bareroot tree for only $9. Cort got to drive the tractor all by himself for the first time, Mom and Dad picked out supports for her new sewing room (a quonset hut picked up off of Freecycle that will be installed above the workshop) out of the wood pile down by the cookhouse (that'll be my pottery studio for my new wheel and kiln I got free off of Craigslist!) and the boys and I measured out the deer fencing expansion. 1227 feet, but so worth it when you see the meadows we'll have as our "enclosed" backyard. The boys were in exceptionally good moods and having so much fun making up weird "exercise" routines by running around the workshop in opposite directions and screaming whenever they'd meet.
Later after picking up the van and lightening our bank account by $1000, Cade and I decided to walk up to the far meadow again. And six of the seven cats (everyone, but the folks' kitty, Penelope) around here decided to follow along. It was so funny -- almost like dogs since as soon as they heard, "Let's go for a walk," they all came running! I wish I had brought along my camera along that time because it was so funny to have all of them hanging right there with us -- it rarely happens any other time.
Just a nice day all around and summer's just around the corner. Bliss.

Did you know?
Your hands smell like grape flavoring after squishing a termite? Guess it's swarm season around here.

Our house. . .
is a very very very fine house. With two (or seven) cats in the yard. . .
Or at least it will be. We've been working on our stable renovation here at the Ranch and I think we have finally come up with a workable floor plan. Sadly the fiber/pottery studio will not be right there next to the house, but I do have the cookhouse down by the spring all to myself (and for my new wheel I got on Freecycle last week!)
As you can see there's going to be lots of built-ins for storage and bookshelves -- mandatory for a family with as many books as we have! -- and plenty of room for all of us. As it is, we're usually all in the same room together most of the time, so having tons of living space (1500 sq ft and up) is usually wasted on us. Of course, we have the great outdoors to play in as well. Who wants to be inside when you can be out in the sun here most of the year? But first it needs to stop raining one of these days!
It's quite a project to undertake, especially since we're doing it as we can afford to pay, so it'll be completed in bits and pieces, but I think between Freecycle, the supplies here at the Ranch, great salvage stores (I'm keeping my eyes open for a big farm kitchen sink) and our hard work, we'll be able to get it all done fairly quickly and inexpensively, too. Wish us luck, we've gotta get to work!

Reading Fool
I guess you never quite realise just how many signs and words are out there in the world until you start driving around with a brand new reader.
Cort's figuring out everything he sees on our drives and reading it. High fives all around!
